How to play Purge in Space: a beginner's first match

This walkthrough turns the official rules into a simple sequence you can follow during your first galaxy.

1. Move before you fight

Spend the first moments testing movement in every direction. Your turret aims independently, so practice moving sideways while keeping the cursor or touch aim on one point. This is the basic shape of both attacking and retreating.

Do not chase the first ship you see across the galaxy. A fresh pilot has no citadels and therefore no ability stacks or established respawn network.

2. Read the minimap

The minimap shows the large hexagonal world, citadel positions, territory ownership, and ability glyphs. Find a nearby neutral citadel that is not surrounded by several hostile pilots. The closest base is not always the safest first capture.

3. Approach the first citadel carefully

Neutral citadels defend themselves. Enter with room to change direction, watch turret fire, and avoid remaining motionless near the center. Keep your aim on threats without forgetting that capture progress depends on surviving the area.

Once captured, the citadel and its region use your color. Its ability appears in the HUD. You have now established the first piece of your territory network.

4. Identify the ability you received

A speed or Blink citadel helps movement and expansion. Regeneration helps recover between encounters. Fire rate, damage, and range make different kinds of attacks stronger. Immunity provides a short defensive window.

Do not wait for a perfect ability on the opposite side of the galaxy. Learn how to use the one you can defend.

5. Choose a second objective

Your next target should usually do one of three things:

  1. Connect to your current region.
  2. Add a complementary ability.
  3. Block a nearby rival from creating a larger territory.

Connected regions can form continents and eventually provide another ability bonus. A compact pair of citadels is also easier to defend than two isolated bases.

6. Take the first useful fight

Fight when the result protects or expands territory. Strafe rather than flying directly into every projectile line. If your opponent has Blink or Immunity, watch for the active effect before committing your own cooldown.

Remember that citadel fire can affect the encounter. Dragging an enemy toward hostile defenses can be safer than pursuing them into owned territory.

7. Preserve a respawn route

After you have owned a citadel, losing all territory becomes dangerous. If you are reduced to one base, stop taking low-value fights far away from it. A final citadel is not only score; it is the infrastructure keeping you in the match.

8. Interrupt the leader

When an Emperor timer appears, open the minimap and identify the leader's exposed border. You do not need to capture every citadel. Taking one large region or connector may be enough to reduce the territory percentage and stop the timer.

9. Build your own strategy

After the first match, read the ability guide and territory strategy guide. The official How to Play page remains the source for controls and exact rules.
